PILING & SHEET PILING

Sheet Piling
Polaris Marine Group delivers specialist sheet piling solutions for marine and waterfront infrastructure projects. Our in-house marine plant, experienced crews, and integrated service delivery ensure precision, safety, and efficiency, whether it’s a new build or part of a broader upgrade program. Sheet piling is a critical technique in marine construction, providing earth retention and water cutoff capabilities in both temporary and permanent applications. We’ve built our reputation on handling technically complex projects where tidal conditions, variable soils, and limited access call for a smart, adaptable approach.

Project Summary

Key Achievements

Comprehensive Sheet Piling Capabilities

From design input to driving and extraction, we manage all stages of sheet piling. Our services are suited to bulkhead and seawall construction, cofferdams for bridge and pier foundations, temporary works for dredging or excavation support, flood protection and bank stabilisation, and containment cells and sediment control structures. We offer both permanent and temporary sheet piling systems, selected based on site conditions, structural requirements, and environmental factors. Our engineers assess ground conditions, tidal influences, and project goals to select the most appropriate approach—whether it’s steel, vinyl, or composite sheet piles.

Marine-Based Delivery

Sheet piling in the marine environment introduces a different layer of complexity. Polaris Marine Group has the marine fleet and experience required to safely install sheet piles in ports, rivers, estuaries, and nearshore zones. We operate crane barges and jack-up platforms, shallow draft support vessels for limited access sites, vibro hammers and silent pilers for noise-sensitive areas, and survey and positioning systems for accurate alignment. Our marine-based approach allows us to install sheet piles without disrupting adjacent land-based operations or sensitive ecosystems. We also manage barge stability, tidal timing, and underwater inspection requirements as part of our in-house scope.

Temporary Works and Excavation Support

Sheet piling is often used as a temporary measure to create dry working conditions in tidal or submerged zones. Polaris Marine Group designs and installs temporary sheet pile walls for cofferdams around bridge piers or pile caps, retained excavations for culverts or pipework, and temporary jetties and plant platforms. We can integrate anchors, walers, and bracing systems into temporary sheet pile structures to manage lateral loads. Once permanent works are complete, we extract piles using vibration or hydraulic methods to restore the site.

Integration With Marine Construction

Sheet piling is rarely a stand-alone activity. It often sits alongside piling, dredging, or structural marine works as part of a larger program. Polaris Marine Group integrates sheet piling into full-service marine construction packages. This reduces delays, simplifies subcontractor management, and improves interface control across activities. We work directly with civil contractors, asset owners, and port authorities to ensure our sheet piling program aligns with project milestones and safety expectations.

Project Experience

We’ve successfully delivered sheet piling projects across a range of marine environments. These include cofferdams for bridge foundations in tidal rivers, retention walls for ferry terminals and pontoons, bulkhead construction in operational port facilities, sheet pile cutoffs to contain contaminated sediments, and temporary walls for dredging and reclamation programs. Our experience allows us to anticipate site-specific challenges and respond quickly, whether it’s tidal movement, poor visibility, or complex permitting conditions.

Safety and Environmental Performance

Working over and near water requires specialist safety systems and environmental protections. Polaris Marine Group prioritises risk management on every sheet piling project. We implement detailed lift studies and Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), floating plant stability analysis and access controls, spill response and sediment containment plans, and fauna observation and underwater noise minimisation. Our crews are trained in both marine safety and sheet piling operations, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements and client standards.

Engineering Support and Design Input

Successful sheet piling starts well before mobilisation. At Polaris Marine Group, our in-house engineers and project planners provide design input and technical advice during early project phases, ensuring that the sheet piling methodology aligns with structural needs, geotechnical conditions, and construction sequencing. We work with designers and principal contractors to review existing designs, suggest optimisations, and develop constructibility strategies tailored to the site. Our input helps prevent common issues such as misalignment, over-specification, or construction delays due to incompatible sequencing. When required, we produce detailed methodology statements, pile driveability assessments, temporary works certifications, and construction staging plans. This collaborative, upfront approach gives clients clarity around costs, timelines, and risk mitigation, while allowing greater control over the quality and performance of the finished structure.
