Polaris Marine Constructions was engaged by Exact Contracting to provide a modular crane barge service at the Dam wall at Manton Dam. The project involved delivering the replacement of internal valving and significant infrastructure upgrades to the Intake Tower while ensuring minimal environmental impact within the sensitive water catchment reserve.
The scope of work included commissioning and operating a 40-tonne crane barge within the protected water catchment reserve. This required strict adherence to environmental, conservation, heritage, and Aboriginal protection regulations to minimise disruption to the surrounding area. To facilitate the necessary works, 14 modular barges were launched to create a 24m x 14m working platform, along with a bespoke scaffold support barge. This included the roll-on of a 40-tonne crawler crane and the self-construction of the barge’s amenities and positioning system.
Supporting the refurbishment of the 1940s-era water intake tower was a critical component of the project. This involved crane operations to replace and overhaul band screens, valves, and essential tower support infrastructure. Additionally, a custom floating scaffold structure was designed and assembled to ensure safe access and operations around the deconstructed intake tower.
All necessary construction equipment and operational support were provided exclusively via water access to preserve the existing environmental conditions. This project demonstrated Polaris Marine Constructions’ capability to execute complex marine infrastructure projects while maintaining strict environmental and heritage conservation standards.
