This project focused on the remediation of a decommissioned uranium mine within Kakadu National Park, a site of significant environmental and cultural importance. The project required a highly specialised approach to safely manage the stabilisation and rehabilitation of the former mine site while adhering to stringent environmental and regulatory requirements.
A key aspect of the project was the design, engineering, and construction of 36 modular barges, which were assembled to form a 75-meter-long work platform. This custom-built floating platform was fully engineered for structural integrity and stability, ensuring it could safely support two 120-tonne wicking rigs operating simultaneously. The use of this modular barge system enabled efficient access to the tailings area, which would have otherwise been inaccessible by conventional means.
The Stage 1 works involved the installation of approximately 41,000 wick drains to accelerate the consolidation of the mine tailings. These wick drains played a crucial role in expediting the natural settlement process, allowing for safer and more effective long-term rehabilitation of the site. The large-scale wick drain installation required precision execution to ensure proper placement and effectiveness in stabilising the tailings.
Due to the project’s remote location and strict environmental guidelines, operations were carefully planned and executed with multiple work fronts operating simultaneously. To meet the demanding schedule, teams worked in 12-hour shifts, with the project running 24 hours a day, ensuring continuous progress and efficiency.
This project showcased innovative engineering solutions, meticulous environmental management, and efficient execution, contributing to the long-term restoration and sustainability of the former uranium mine site within Kakadu National Park
